A message for Parents & Caregivers from Dr Coleman - taken from the MAP Workshop Series
“Children learn about themselves by the way we communicate with them. For children between birth and five years this is mostly non-verbal, so they need to see our eyes & face which mirror that they are worthy of our kind attention, love & delight. Our loving presence enables our children to experience being protected and understood which builds their confidence and trust in life. Fifty years of research supports the long-term benefits of having a secure attachment relationship with Parents and Caregivers. Secure attachment is formed when we sensitively and consistently respond to our child's relationship needs with strength and kindness ('tuned in' or 'attuned'). When we are preoccupied with the past or worried about the future (in 'automatic pilot'), we are physically present with our children but are mentally absent. Children do not need us to be fully available all the time, but they do need our presence during connecting interactions. This includes needing to be welcomed by us when frightened or supported to explore their environment when curious (attachment & exploration needs).
Being a Mindful Parent means having intention in our actions so we can purposefully choose our behaviour with our child's emotional & social wellbeing in mind. Parental self-compassion helps our children to learn that perfection is not the goal and rewards are not just for perfect jobs. Repairing relationship disconnections is the key to being a 'Good Enough' Parent, which basically means making mistakes with our children and knowing how to fix them. With mindfulness & self-compassion we can repair relationship disconnections with our children, which is a crucial aspect of developing secure attachment relationships with our children.
With mindful awareness & self-compassion we can become attuned with ourselves, which helps our children to more fully experience themselves in the present moment. This helps them to make sense of their rich inner life of feelings, thoughts & physical sensations as well as their environment. This is the heart of Mindful Awareness Parenting (MAP) Workshop Series. MAP allows Parents to practise mindfulness & self-compassion and learn about the crucial relationship needs of young children. Parents deserve respect, support and information to improve confidence that their love is getting through to their children " (Coleman, Copyright 2008, 2011).
DR. REBECCA COLEMAN - REGISTERED CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST
Dr. Coleman has been studying and working in the
discipline of psychology for the past twenty years.
After completing her undergraduate degree she
worked as a rehabilitation consultant, research
assistant and psychology lecturer & tutor. After the
completion of a postgraduate Master of
Psychology in Clinical & Health Psychology she worked
in child, adolescent, adult and forensic
mental health settings. Dr Coleman developed, coordinated
and evaluated an award winning
promotion, prevention, and early intervention project
for parents with children under 5 years of age
(funded by the Eyre Regional Health Service Inc).
She was recently awarded an international
fellowship for past accomplishments and future promise
in the area of child and adolescent mental health.

Clinical Psychological Services
Dr Coleman will be available for consultation with children,
adolescents and families in 2012. She will also be running MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) workshops.
Dr Coleman is a clinically trained Psychologist and can help to prevent,
assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of
problems encountered by infants, children, adolescents and
adults. Her orientation to therapy is
relationship based and utilizes evidence-based practice.

The MAP five week workshop series was developed by Dr Rebecca Coleman to enhance trusting and secure relationships between parents and young children (Birth-5yrs). Dr Coleman is a Registered Psychologist who specialises in Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology and is a passionate advocate for the importance of early childhood parenting knowledge and support.
The MAP Time-in 8-week protocol was developed for parents of children and adolescents (birth - 18 years) for use with qualified mental health & education professionals. The two volume practise CD is relevant and useful for all parents of children aged from birth-18 years.
